Toyota Safety Sense™ Features & Technology

Toyota Corolla DrivingAlmost every Toyota model comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense™. This system is a suite of driver-assisting technology features. These features respond to readings from the exterior-mounted radar sensors that measure the distance of objects ahead as well as the rate or approach of your vehicle. Using these metrics, the systems will determine if a collision is likely based on the factors and will provide you with a visual and audible alert.

Toyota Safety Sense™ includes:

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection: This feature can sense an impending collision and will not only alert you, but it will also provide enough brake pressure to reduce the severity of the collision as well as give you enough time to react and stop the vehicle completely.
  • Lane Departure Alert: When your vehicle begins to stray from the intended lane, this system will alert you while providing selective brake pressure to prevent the vehicle from drifting further out of its lane.
  • Automatic High Beams: The sensors on your vehicle can detect low natural light and will activate your high beams, but it will resort to standard head lights when there is a vehicle within close proximity.
  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control: This feature lets you pre-set a desired distance from the vehicle ahead along with your preferred cruising speed. It will then adapt to the flow of traffic and keep the safe distance.

Toyota Safety Ratings & Accolades

Toyota TundraThe two major authorities on assessing a vehicle’s safety are the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Each organization critiques each vehicle’s performance during a crash test and determines where any weak spots are that could lead to injury or death based on how the frame is affected, as well as how the safety systems performed.

The Toyota safety ratings from these organizations are high. Recently, the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback, the 2020 Toyota Corolla Sedan, and the 2019 Toyota Prius Hatchback and Prius Prime all earned a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS due to their impressive performance in their respective crash tests. Many Toyota models earned a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating from the NHTSA.
