The Toyota Highlander and the Acura MDX each comes equipped with a 3.5L V6 engine under their respective hood. Both engines come mated to electronically controlled automatic transmissions. In terms of output, the Highlander has a slight lead ahead of the MDX with 295 horsepower vs. 290 horsepower.

The Highlander also offers its drivers a hybrid engine option for a more eco-friendly performance. The Acura MDX offers the Sport Hybrid SH-AWD®, but that’s just its all-wheel drive system. It doesn’t offer an actual hybrid engine.

Cabin Dimensions & Cargo Capacity

These stylish SUVs offer their respective passengers plenty of space among three rows of seating. In the front row, the Highlander offers its passengers 41.2 inches of headroom and 42 inches of legroom, while the MDX features 38.1 inches of headroom and 41.4 inches of legroom.

When it comes to the second row, the Toyota Highlander offers its riders 39.4 inches of headroom and 41 inches of legroom. The Acura MDX includes 38.3 inches of headroom and 36.6 inches of legroom.

In terms of cargo space, there’s quite a lot to go around. The Highlander features 16 cubic feet in back but expands to 48.4 cubic feet with the third row folded down and up to 84.3 cubic feet with the back two rows flat. The Acura MDX offers 15 cubic feet but only expands to 38.4 cubic feet when the third row is folded. It maxes out at 68.4 cubic feet with the back two rows folded.

Driver-Assisting Technology

The Acura MDX and the Toyota Highlander each offer some significant driver-assisting features to provide additional protection and security. Each vehicle features pre-collision systems, lane-keeping systems, and even adaptable cruise control systems.

However, the Highlander adds a few more standard features, like Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist, and even Cyclist Detection.
