The major difference here is that the Highlander offers more options with the engine selection. On top of the base engine, the Highlander features an available 3.5L V6 that produces 295 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, the Highlander even offers a hybrid engine option.

The 4Runner offers seating for five to seven passengers, with an available third row. The Highlander comes standard with three rows of seating for seven to eight passengers. The 4Runner offers front row passengers 39.3 inches of headroom and 41.7 inches of legroom while the Highlander includes 40.7 inches of headroom and 44.2 inches of legroom.

As for cargo, each vehicle includes foldable rear seats to help you make more room for your materials. The 4Runner offers 47.2 cubic feet of cargo space in the rear while the Highlander includes 13.8 cubic feet of cargo, but 42.3 cubic feet when the third row is folded flat.
