Honda Accord vs Toyota Camry: Powertrain and MPG

2019 Toyota Camry Lineup

Both the Accord and Camry are well-known for their sporty powertrains and efficient fuel consumption, so you can be sure you’re getting a highly drivable car with either sedan. However, we wanted to put their engines side-by-side to see how they compare on power.

Looking at their standard engines, we see that the Toyota Camry has a 2.5L I-4 engine while the Accord offers a 1.5L turbo I-4 engine. Here’s how their power output compares:

  • Toyota Camry: 203 horsepower
  • Honda Accord: 192 horsepower

Despite delivering more power, the Camry also has a higher EPA-estimated highway fuel economy, coming in at 41 MPG compared to 38 MPG highway in the Accord.1

Safety Technology in the Accord vs Camry

Whether you drive the Honda Accord or Toyota Camry, you can expect some high-tech safety technology designed to help you stay more aware of your surroundings while you’re out-and-about. Even better, both cars make their safety tech suite standard on every trim level.

These suites include features like a Forward Collision Mitigation System. This monitors for unexpected or unseen hazards up ahead and issues alert to slow down or apply the brakes. If necessary, it’ll also apply automatic braking to help bring your car to a stop in an attempt to prevent a collision.

To further assist in collision mitigation, the Toyota Camry also has the standard Star Safety System™. This Toyota-exclusive suite includes Smart Stop Technology.

Sometimes, in the moments before a collision, drivers may accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake. If that happens, the Smart Stop Technology feature will take over and bring your car to a stop. Without a similar technology, the Accord may seem less proactive in emergency braking situations.

Audio and Connectivity: Honda Accord and Toyota Camry

2019 Toyota Camry Interior Technology

When commuting to work, heading downtown for a night in the city or setting out on a road trip, having the right music playlist can make a big difference.

This is a sentiment echoed by both sedans, which make Bluetooth® connectivity standard. With this kind of technology, you can connect your smartphone directly to your infotainment system and make hands-free phone calls or stream music from your device.

With available Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay™ capabilities, as well, you can access some of your favorite compatible internet radio apps directly through your 7- or 8-inch touchscreen display in the center stack.

When you’re listening to your favorite tunes, however, you may have a better audio experience in the Toyota Camry, which makes an 800-watt Entune™ 3.0 Premium audio system available with JBL® and Clari-Fi™ technology.

Clair-Fi™ technology decompresses digital audio files in real-time, creating a clear and dynamic listening experience. The Honda Accord unfortunately doesn’t offer this kind of sound-enhancing technology, nor does it offer an audio system above 450 Watts.
